Taylor Russell McKenzie was born on the 18th of July 1994 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was raised in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Russell was the daughter of a mother of white and black parents. She grew up with her mother's side. She claimed that her skin color was the primary reason for her feeling rejected by her peers as a child. They struggled with financial issues. They were always moving and had to move 16 times in order to help support their father's work. However, despite this hardship, Russell mentioned how in her younger days "there was always a chance for reinvention, to create something new."As as a young person, Russell was already artistically inclined. At first, she desired to pursue a profession in ballet and later to become a painter. At the age of 18, she took her first acting class and finally found her place. She saved the money from work to buy a car and drove to Los Angeles to audition. She would go back to work once her savings ran out and then resume auditioning again. This process continued for four years until she was offered her first big TV appearance.
