Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as a public speechwriter. Feminist Frequency hosts videos, comments and an analysis of how popular culture depicts women. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American blogger and media critic that has received awards for her work, is an activist blogger. Feminist Frequency is a not-for profit educational site that explores the representation of women in pop culture narratives - is created and is directed by Sarkeesian. As well as working to expose the issues surrounding the targeted and sexist attack on women and others of minority groups in the online world, she is dedicated to breaking down the stigmas and stereotypes associated with pop culture. Sarkeesian also holds a York University master's in social theological, philosophical and political thought. In addition to being an acclaimed public speaker, she has given speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO Conference and United Nations Broadband Working Group. She was fascinated by gender issues and feminism at a young time. In 2009, when she was still studying at university she launched her Feminist Frequency website. It was a girl determined to make an online series which would explore how gender is represented in video games. However, she became victimized by online harassment. The attack did not deter her instead it was a boost to her determination as a feminist media critic. As a result of the many achievements she's made for feminism, she is recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her role as a critic of media and founded Feminist Frequency. The nonprofit examines how women are depicted in pop culture today.
